TMS for Anxiety

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a common mental health condition comprising persistent and excessive worry or fear about everyday situations. Symptoms of anxiety range widely and include nervousness, restlessness, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty concentrating. While occasional anxiety is normal, persistent anxiety can interfere with your capability to complete daily activities and your quality of life. Your doctor may have diagnosed you with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a panic disorder, or a social anxiety disorder.

What causes anxiety?

A combination of quite a few factors, including genetic, environmental, and psychological, can cause anxiety. Genetics may play a role, as anxiety disorders can run in families. Environmental factors such as trauma, stress from work or personal relationships, and significant life changes can trigger anxiety. Psychological factors, including personality traits and coping mechanisms, also contribute. Additionally, medical conditions and substance use can exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

TMS Therapy for Anxiety - Does TMS Work for Anxiety?

TMS can help relieve the symptoms of anxiety. A safe and noninvasive procedure, TMS involves a magnetic coil being placed on the patient’s scalp. The magnetic waves massage the nerves in the brain associated with mood and anxiety. The impulses of the specifically targeted nerves change after the magnetic pulses. Although it is less studied than the application of TMS for depression, research suggests TMS is an effective treatment for anxiety.
