TMS for Depression

What is Depression?

The World Health Organization estimates that some 280 million people in the world live with depression. This common mental illness causes feelings of sadness and irritability, a lack of interest in your usual activities, and, in some cases, thoughts of suicide. Depression is more severe and long-lasting than everyday mood changes. The symptoms of depression can have adverse effects on many areas of your life, from relationships to your work or school outcomes. While anyone can have depression, it is more common in people who have lived through stressful or traumatic events.

What Causes Depression?

There is more than one cause for depression. Though for some people, it is a chemical imbalance in the brain, depression can also be situational. Those who are in traumatic situations like addiction, divorce, the death of a loved one, or isolation are more likely to develop depression as well. Poor physical health, a history of other mental illnesses, and childhood trauma are also factors that increase depression risk in individuals.

TMS Therapy for Depression - Does TMS Work for Depression?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is being used by medical professionals in the United States to treat depression in individuals who have not had success with other treatments. A magnetic coil is used in this noninvasive procedure to stimulate nerves in the brain in areas related to mood. TMS is approved by the FDA for people with depression. It’s also approved for use to help people quit smoking and for other mental illnesses. More than 80% of people treated with TMS for their depression experience improvements, and over half of those individuals see their depression symptoms go away completely!
