TMS for OCD

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a mental illness characterized by two main aspects. The first is unwanted and intrusive thoughts, known as obsessions. The second is repetitive behaviors or mental acts, known as compulsions, performed to alleviate anxiety caused by these thoughts. Common obsessions are fears of contamination, harm, or losing control, while compulsions often involve cleaning, checking, or counting rituals. OCD is treatable.

What causes OCD?

Like some of the above mental illnesses, we don’t know the exact cause of OCD. Genetics can play a role, as OCD tends to run in families. Brain structure and function abnormalities, particularly in areas related to behavior and decision-making, may also contribute. Additionally, stressful life events, childhood trauma, and certain infections have been linked to the onset of OCD symptoms.

TMS Therapy for OCD - Does TMS Work for OCD?

Similarly to patients with depression, people with persistent OCD that doesn’t respond to other treatments may be referred to TMS offices. According to the International OCD Foundation, research shows OCD can be successfully treated with TMS, and in recent years, it has become a more common treatment for this mental illness. TMS magnetic coils send pulses into the areas of the brain that are associated with OCD, altering the cranial nerve behavior.
